On Missions and Users' Pain

Of note, we are not a big fan of mission. They are self-serving and more about organizations than their customers. Rather than starting with a "lofty" mission and working backward, we start with the reality users are living through right now and work forward.

We look for friction, the confusion, the unmet needs — what's not working, what's breaking down, and where the pain is sharpest. That's where we begin. Short-term user pain is not a distraction from the big picture; it is the big picture. If we can solve something that matters today, we build credibility, trust, and momentum. And when we find patterns in that pain — when short-term struggles hint at deeper, systemic gaps — that's when long-term thinking becomes useful.

But it has to be earned. Long-term solutions are only meaningful if they're rooted in the real, lived experience of users — not invented in a boardroom. This is why we're skeptical of missions. They often ignore the immediate in favor of the ideal.

We prefer a model grounded in responsiveness, humility, and actual user signals. No assumptions. No abstractions. Just problems worth solving, one layer at a time.
